Just 15 minutes from the Great Mosque of Algiers, you’ll find a completely different world – Jardin d’Essai du Hamma, a 32-hectare tropical paradise in the heart of Algiers.
Founded in 1832, this is one of the most important botanical gardens in Africa and the place where the first Tarzan movie was filmed in 1932. With over 1,200 plant species and nearly 1 million visitors per year, it’s a must-visit in Algiers.
1. Why is Jardin d’Essai So Famous?
History: Created by the French as a test garden to see which plants could grow in Algeria.
• Hollywood Connection: The 1932 movie Tarzan the Ape Man with Johnny Weissmuller was filmed in its famous palm avenue.
• Size: 32 hectares divided into two parts: French Garden (formal) and English Garden (wild).
2. What to See Inside?
The Palm Avenue (Allée des Palmiers): The most photographed spot. 500m of tall Washington palm trees.
The French Garden: Perfectly manicured lawns, fountains, symmetrical design.
The English Garden: More wild, with huge Ficus trees and bamboo forest.
The Small Zoo: Inside the garden, you can see monkeys and birds (included in ticket).
National Museum of Fine Arts: Located at the top of the garden with a stunning view.

Opening Hours: Every day from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM (until 6 PM in winter).

• Adults: 150 DZD
• Kids under 10: Free
• Zoo: +50 DZD extra
How to Get There: The easiest way is Metro Line 1, get off at Jardin d’Essai station. The entrance is 2 minutes walk.
Best Time to Visit: Early morning (9-10 AM) for photos without crowds. Spring (March-May) is the most beautiful.
