Standing on the coast of Mohammadia, this is not just a mosque – it’s the largest mosque in Africa, the second-largest in the Islamic world after Masjid al-Haram, and home to the tallest minaret in the world at 265 meters.
After visiting it twice, here is everything you need to know before you go.
1. Why is Djamaa El Djazair So Famous?
Inaugurated in February 2024 after 12 years of construction, the mosque was built to be a symbol of Algerian identity.

Opening Hours for Tourists: Open for non-worshippers from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Saturday to Thursday. Closed on Fridays during Jumu’ah prayer (until 2:30 PM).
Is it Free? Yes, entry to the mosque is 100% free. You only need to pay if you want to visit the museum (approx. 400 DZD).
Dress Code (Very Strict):
• Men: Long trousers, no shorts. Shoulders covered.
• Women: Headscarf is mandatory (they provide it at the entrance), long skirt/dress, arms covered.
• Everyone must take off shoes. They give you a bag to carry them.
How to Get There: Take the Tramway to “Les Fusillés” station or a taxi from Algiers Center (about 30 minutes). Use Yassir app, it’s cheaper.
